PT-141 (bremelanotide) works centrally: it activates melanocortin receptors in brain circuits governing desire and arousal. Kisspeptin works higher up the hormone cascade: it triggers the hypothalamic switch that starts the whole reproductive axis, driving the release of luteinizing hormone and, downstream, sex steroids.

What are research peptides?
Proteins in your body — a hormone, a receptor-binding signal, a structural scaffold — are long amino-acid chains folded into shapes. A peptide is a much shorter chain of the same amino acids, sometimes only a handful of links long. Because they are small and specific, peptides can act like keys fitting particular locks on cell surfaces, switching targeted processes on or off.
A research peptide is one that has been synthesized and studied in the laboratory — in cell cultures, animals, or early human trials — but has not been approved by a regulator as a medicine for most uses. One notable exception applies to PT-141, which has received FDA approval for one narrow indication. Material sold as a research chemical sits outside that approval framework, with no regulatory oversight of identity, purity, or dosing. Wherever this desk reports a number, it reports it as studied — never as a recommendation.
How these two fit into sexual and reproductive research
PT-141 and kisspeptin approach the same broad territory from different levels of the biology.
- PT-141 is the lead. It is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide that activates melanocortin receptors in the brain — chiefly MC4R in hypothalamic and limbic circuits — which engage the neural networks underlying sexual desire and arousal [2][7]. Its path from animal pharmacology to human Phase 3 trials ended in FDA approval (as bremelanotide injection) for one indication: acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women [3][5]. That approval is meaningful, and it also defines the boundary of what is established. All other uses — in men, in postmenopausal women, in any performance-enhancement context — are off-label and, as research chemicals, unapproved.
- Kisspeptin is investigational. It is a family of natural neuropeptides encoded by the KISS1 gene that act on KISS1R receptors on the hypothalamic GnRH neurons that control the reproductive hormone cascade [12]. Human trials have studied it in hypothalamic amenorrhea, IVF oocyte triggering, and in studies of sexual attraction and brain response — but no kisspeptin product has been approved by any regulator for any indication [9].
